Alcohol Anonymous, more commonly known as AA is the world’s largest self help group for people who want to kick their alcohol addiction. Alcohol Anonymous is a group of men and women who have suffered from or are themselves suffering from alcoholism, and who turn towards each other in order to help themselves get rid of their addictions. If you think that you are an alcoholic or are “addicted to alcohol”, then you can seek help from your local AA chapter.

People at Alcohol Anonymous will not tell you whether you are an alcoholic or not. So it is up to you to judge if you are one, in case there are any doubts. If you feel the urges or cravings to lay hands on your favorite poison, always end up drinking more than what you wanted to, or are physically dependent on alcohol to get you through the day or the night, then you are what can be termed an alcohol dependent or alcoholic person. There are a lot of people who think that they are not alcoholics just because they have the ability to consume large amounts of alcohol without losing control of their senses, but in the true sense of the word, these people are also alcohol dependent.

First Step

Once you are sure that you are an alcoholic, then the first step to take in order to kick the habit is to abstain from drinking as much as possible. While it is easy to tell somebody to cut down on consumption of alcohol, it is impossible for the alcoholic to follow this advice because of the condition that he or she is suffering from.

Therefore, it is important for alcohol dependent people to seek support at these times from people who have managed to or are in the process of kicking the habit and this is the core group forming Alcohol Anonymous.

Alcohol Anonymous is the best kind of support group that anybody can ever think of joining, because it is one of those rare organizations in the world that is apolitical non-denominational and multiracial. The group has absolutely no social, political or religious leanings and the only leaning the group has is towards reaching a collective goal of non-alcoholism.

Self-supporting

Alcohol Anonymous is a self supporting, non- professional organization that is founded, run and managed by past or even current alcoholics, and everybody is free to join in. There are no requirements to be met to become a member, apart from the inclination to kick alcoholism.

Alcohol Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous has the distinction of being the world’s largest self help organization. Branches and AA groups can be found in almost every city in the world. The group’s members meet almost every week, where they discuss the problems that they are facing as a result of being alcohol dependent, how they want to kick the habit, how they have managed to get out of the quick sands of alcoholism and what are the positive and negative changes in their lives as a

result of alcoholism and as a result of getting rid of it.

Free For All

Alcohol Anonymous membership is free for all. The organization does not solicit members but all are free to come and go as they please. There are no attendance or membership records. However, the organization does have a buddy system, where one person is codependent on the other and vice versa, and each one tries to prevent their partner from getting a relapse.

Thus it is extremely easy to join Alcohol Anonymous and the group therapy that takes place at Alcohol Anonymous meetings is advised by experts for all those who want to get rid of their dependence on alcohol. You can also check out the organization’s local branch by attending a couple of meetings.

The Main Characteristics Of Addiction Treatment In Nevada

Monday, December 22nd, 2008
Todd Lange

The addiction treatment given in various countries follows different principles and thus there can be some differences in the addiction programs all over the world. For example the addiction treatment program in US will be different than the addiction treatment program in UK. In the US, addiction treatment entails bringing the patient completely out of the habit, but addiction program in UK is different. In UK the main focus is given on lowering the dependency of the addict so as to remove threat of the addictive substance from the addict’s life.

In the US too, the pattern of addiction treatment will not be same in the different states.

The addiction treatment in Nevada has the basic aim to help the addicts quit their addiction and come out of it completely. The addiction treatment program in Nevada believes that it is possible to bring the addict completely out of addiction. Thus the treatment programs are made more vigorous in order to help the patients to live life that will not depend upon the addictive substance. With a carefully followed treatment program in Nevada, many people who were into heavy addiction have come out of their addiction and are leading a drug free life.

The main characteristics of a program for addiction treatment in Nevada are given below-

Bringing Addicts to Addiction Treatment Centers:

It is very rare that the addicts themselves get admitted into addiction treatment center in Nevada to take treatment over their addiction. Most of the time addicts themselves are unable to find that there is something wrong with them and that they need treatment. The addicts can also deny that they need a treatment even after constant persuading of their family and friends.

The family members of the addict will need to take some professional help. They can contact any treatment center and take the help of the intervention program. The intervention programs have a bigger role to play in the overall treatment program in Nevada. The first important thing done by the intervention program is to convince the addict to join a treatment program. The interventionist along with the family members of the addict will plan for various ways in which the family will interact with the addict.

The interventionist will ask the family members to write an emotional speech which will tell the addict how important he or she is for that family member and how much the family wants him or her to live a drug free life. The interventionist will crosscheck the speeches of all the family members and will give some suggestions. With continue efforts the addict will finally come out of the denial phase and join a treatment program and take a treatment.

Detoxification Process:

The detoxification process is the main process in the whole treatment program in addiction treatment program in Nevada. In the detoxification process the addictive substance from the patient’s body is removed entirely. This process makes sure that not even a single drop of the addictive substance remains in the body of the patients. Thus due to this process the patient can be rest assured that they will never have any major health hazards in their future life after leaving the addiction.

Detoxification process is done in the inpatient treatment program where patient will be monitored for few days so that if the patient shows any major withdrawal symptoms, then he or she will get treated then and there itself. In detoxification process the patient will be asked to stop taking addictive substance and after that the patient will need to undergo certain medications.

The detoxification process can stretch from anywhere between three days and three weeks. For those who are into an addiction since a long time, the detoxification process takes long time to get done.

Aftercare Program:

Once the patient comes out of the detoxification process, he or she will need proper care and proper medications so as to stay away from a relapse condition. Most of the centers for addiction treatment in Nevada have the aftercare program in their centers. Here the patients will be given proper counseling, so that they can stay focused and out of addiction.

Along with the medications and care, the patient will also be taught certain exercises like breathing exercises, Yoga and relaxation therapies. The family of the patients will also be given counseling and told various ways to deal the situation if in any case the patient has a relapse after the treatment gets over and patient goes home. The family will be trained so that they can give proper motivation to the patient so that patient has the determination to overcome the urge to go back to addiction.

Alcohol and Alcohol Beverages

Thursday, December 18th, 2008
Nandeshori Devi Konthoujam

Alcohol is a colorless impulsive combustible liquid, synthesized by fermentation of starches and sugars. The chemical formula of alcohol is C2H5OH, and it is also term as ethanol, ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol and is extensively used, both in pure and denatured forms as solvent, cleaning solutions, in drugs, explosives, and exhilarating beverages. In other words alcohol is the any form of hydroxyl compounds and is the simplest derivatives of the saturated hydrocarbons of CnH2n+1OH general formula, including ethanol and methanol.

Alcohol is the class of organic compounds which have one or additional hydroxyl groups (-OH) appended to one or other more carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain. Representing the number of supplementary substituent groups on carbon atom by R, alcohol are categorized as primary alcohol (RCH2OH), secondary alcohol (R2CHOH), or tertiary alcohol (R3COH). Several alcohols are found in nature and are important intermediates in synthesis of further compounds due to the distinctive chemical reactions of hydroxyl groups of the alcohol.

Some of the chemical properties of alcohol includes that the primary alcohols give up aldehydes on oxidation and the ketones by the secondary alcohols and the tertiary alcohols breaks down. On reaction with carboxylic acids esters are produced that can be converted to ethers as well as olefins. Some of the worth mentioning products of such reactions are detergents, fats, emulsifiers, waxes, emollients, plasticizers, lubricants, and spraying agents. Grain alcohol or Ethanol and wood alcohol or methanol is the best alcohols containing only one hydroxyl group. Ethylene glycol and antifreeze are the glycols having two hydroxyl groups and three in glycerol, and three or other in polyols.

Alcohols normally have smell that dangles in nasal passages and the alcoholic beverages are consuming by the humans which is ethanol form. Man is consuming alcoholic beverages for different hygienic, religious, dietary, medicinal, and recreational purposes. Alcohol consumption is beneficial if taken in little amount and in proper time but if people starts consuming it frequently and becoming addiction is very harmful to health.

Intoxication or addiction on alcoholic beverages lead to acute respiratory malfunction or death as well as chronic utilization has medical consequences. Other alcoholic beverages produce more toxics and require longer duration in metabolizing in the body. The worst effect of alcoholic beverages is in case of the wood alcohol or methanol which can be oxidized by an enzyme in the live called alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes forming poisonous formaldehyde resulting to blindness or fatality.

Administration of ethanol is the only solution to prevent and treat formaldehyde toxicity on methanol consumption but all people are not aware of the fact. Ethanol acts as substrate preventing methanol from binding to alcohol dehydrogenase. Alcohol is usually taken in social occasions like a party or meal and in such occasions people mix with some amount of water to avoid overindulging.

At the same time people undergoing weight loss treat must refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages as it contains a soaring concentration of detrimental sugars and bare calories and alcohol consumption generally drives to compromise ones habits, that might disturbed the control over certain foods. Therefore the alcoholic beverage consumers must always try to stick on self control and restraint from over consumption.

The Common Problems Associated With The Addiction Treatment Program In Montana

Monday, December 15th, 2008
Todd Lange

There are various centers in Montana that offer a neatly planned addiction treatment program, whatever the kind of addiction may be. But there are some common problems faced by all these treatment centers in order to help their patients come out of addiction. The two biggest problems that make the success rate of the addiction program in Montana go down are denial and codependency.

But the state substance abuse authorities are carrying out various actions and programs to fight with these two things. It is much necessary to know denial and codependency factors so as to understand the problems faced by the treatment centers in Montana.

The Problem Number 1: Denial

The number of addicts is going up but the number of patients getting admitted to the treatment centers in Montana is still low. This shows that they are many addicts who are still denying that they need any treatment. This is a very common problem that the addiction programs are facing in each and every state of America. Denial is a phase where the addict refuses to take a treatment and unless and until he or she overcomes this phase it is very difficult for the treatment program to work effectively.

Most of the addicts who are in denial mode are unaware about the dangers of their addiction and according to them they are not doing anything wrong for others so they want everyone else to just leave them alone. Such addicts will think that they are in their limits and don’t need any treatment.

Their families are most of the time unaware about their loved one’s addiction habits and thus there is no one to force them or convince them to join a treatment program. Some of the addict’s even neglect the constant pestering of their family members for joining an addiction treatment. Thus the addict is going deeper into their addiction.

If you are also finding it difficult to convince your loved one who is into addiction, to take a treatment, then best way is to take help from an intervention of an addiction treatment program in Montana. Intervention program has many responsibilities and their one important responsibility is to help addicts to come out of their denial mode and join a treatment program. The intervention program along with the group formed by family and friends of the addict will make a plan to motivate and encourage the addict to join a treatment program.

The denial phase will surely pass with all these efforts and the patient will readily join a treatment program in Montana and will surely come out of their addiction.

The Problem Number 2: Codependency

Codependency is the second hurdle why addicts are not joining the treatment programs for getting out of addiction. The main cause of this problem is the family of the addict and the family’s behavior towards the addict. Many times the family of the addict tries to put a cover over the addiction of their loved one. The family members do this out of love for the addict but this makes the addict think that they can do whatever and have any kind of addiction still they will be loved.

This makes the addict more confident into their addiction habits and pushes the addicts to do the addiction without any fear. This type of codependency is very risky for the addict’s life. Thus in a way the family is pushing their loved one into deeper addiction and before they will realize it, it will become too late to act.

There are other kinds of families too. These families will have fights and arguments, as they dislike their loved one getting addicted to some substance. The fights and abuses will make the addict feel unloved and uncared. This will make the addict stressed out and out of sadness they will start consuming the addictive substance in greater quantities and in large number.

The codependency problem is the major block in the success of the treatment program in Montana. This problem is tackled by giving out proper counseling to the families of the addict. This way the families will be told what they should do and how they should behave with the addict in order to help the addict join a treatment program.

The counseling will help the families and give them various ways which they can try to make their loved one who are in an addiction to understand the seriousness of their condition and take up an addiction treatment program in Montana as soon as possible.

Why do some people call alcoholism a disease?

Sunday, December 14th, 2008
john

If you have Aids and you stop having sex, Aids will still be in your system. If you are an alcoholic and you stop drinking, alcohol will no longer be in your system.

Besides that, most diseases have medication to treat the disease. What do you do to treat alcoholism, take medication? No, you stop drinking, that’s how.

A word that is commonly found in the definition of disease is “involuntary”. But when you drink alcohol, that is voluntary, not involuntary!

I also believe that many alcoholics will say that they have a disease because that takes some of the responsibility off them so they don’t have to be responsible for their actions.

How can I overcome my addiction to cigarettes?

Saturday, December 13th, 2008
pureessence

I decided to quit last Sunday night, but just Friday night, I cheated and smoked two cigarettes. Last night, I was really close to buying cigarettes at 7-eleven but bought lollipops and gums instead. I tried watching a good movie, eating my favorite food & dessert, sucking on suckers, chewing gum, talking to my friends, but I still get the urge. I always try to think about the negativities of smoking, like my health, my looks, smell, money, morals, etc, but I still long for a puff. So how can I get through this?
If you were never a smoker, please don’t respond, since you have no idea how difficult it is. It’s so easy for you to say, “Just quit.” Thank you.

Are all addictions considered a sin, even something trivial?

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008
jess♥

I happen to have a caffeine addiction. Mountain Dew and coffee are my big weaknesses. I get headaches and jittery when I don’t get enough caffeine in a day.
It doesn’t really bother me too much. I enjoy my caffeine and i have no desire to end this addiction.
I am a christian and I recently learned that addictions are sins. So I was wondering if anyone knows if that applies to all addictions, just things like drugs alcohol sex, etc,?

Thanks for your opinions.
